Where Expats’ Finances Go a Long Way (and Where They Don’t)

Asian destinations are overrepresented in the top 10. European countries occupy the bottom — though the worst-ranking country is found at the opposite end of the world.

Top Findings

  • Eight of the top 10 destinations are located in Asia.
  • Four of the bottom 10 countries are in Europe, but New Zealand ranks last.
  • In #1 Vietnam, 8% say they have an income of more than 250,000 USD a year (vs. 3% globally).
  • Expats in #2 Mexico and #3 Indonesia highlight the affordable cost of living.
  • #44 Hong Kong is the only Asian destination in the bottom 10.

Methodology

The Personal Finance Index of the Expat Insider 2022 survey includes 52 destinations around the world, with a minimum sample size of 50 respondents each. The index is based on three factors: satisfaction with the financial situation, general cost of living, and whether a respondent’s disposable household income is enough to lead a comfortable life.

Of Sun, Safety, Sports & More: The Quality of Life Index

The destinations with the best quality of life in 2022 offer good healthcare and transportation, among other factors, while the bottom 3 leave expats dissatisfied across the board.

Top Findings

  • #1 Spain only misses out on a top 10 rank in one of the five subcategories.
  • #2 Taiwan is the undisputed winner when it comes to Health & Well-Being.
  • Expats love #3 Austria, particularly in matters of Travel & Transit.
  • #52 Kuwait, #51 India, and #50 the Philippines make up the bottom 3.
  • The bottom 10 are geographically diverse, but Europe and Asia dominate the top 10.

Methodology

The Quality of Life Index 2022 covers 21 rating factors across five different subcategories: Travel & Transit, Environment & Climate, Leisure Options, Health & Well-Being, and Safety & Security. Expats rated the factors on a scale from one (very bad) to seven (very good). This resulted in a ranking of 52 destinations with a minimum of 50 respondents each.

From Great Job Markets to a Lack of Career Opportunities

The best countries for working abroad in 2022 impress with their job markets and work-life balance. Expats in the bottom 3 are particularly unhappy with the local business culture.

  • #1 Denmark is popular for its work-life balance and working hours.
  • Expats in #2 Australia and #3 Ireland are happy with the local job market.
  • #52 Turkey, #51 Kuwait, and #50 the Philippines make up the bottom 3 of the index.
  • Seven out of the top 10 countries in the index are located in Europe.
  • Asian countries make up four of the bottom 10 destinations in the index.

Methodology

The Working Abroad Index includes 52 countries and territories in total with a minimum sample size of 50 respondents per destination. It is based on four subcategories with at least two factors each. The Career Prospects Subcategory factors in the local job market, personal career opportunities, and whether moving to the destination in question improved expats’ career prospects. The Salary & Job Security Subcategory includes questions on job security, the state of the economy, and fair pay. Working hours and work-life balance make up the Work & Leisure Subcategory. And, aside from overall job satisfaction, the Work Culture & Satisfaction Subcategory looks into whether expats see a purpose in their work and if the local business culture encourages creativity / thinking outside the box, supports flexibility, and promotes independent work and/or flat hierarchies. Survey respondents were asked to rate each factor on a scale of 1 to 7.

Basics of Life Abroad Easiest to Come By in Expat Hubs

With Bahrain, the UAE, and Singapore, three typical expat hubs land in the top 3. Germany, Japan, and China, however, make some of the basics very hard for expats to sort out.

Top Findings

  • #1 Bahrain makes life abroad convenient regarding language and admin topics.
  • Fellow Gulf State #2 UAE shows very similar strengths.
  • #3 Singapore impresses expats with its Digital Life, among other things.
  • All Gulf States, except for Kuwait, make it into the top 10.
  • Six of the bottom 10 destinations for Expat Essentials are located in Europe.

A Month of Joy — June with InterNations

June is a great month to experience, no matter where you are. It is the month of the longest (and shortest) day of the year, the month of summer celebrations (in the Northern hemisphere), but also simply a great time to travel and have new and exciting experiences.

Below are some of the ways in which our members spent this month together, from chic white parties and summer festivals to escapes from the big cities. But you’ll also find some exciting upcoming events that you should not miss if you are visiting or living in these communities. And maybe they will even be an inspiration of how you, too, can celebrate this month of joy.

Stay Cool in the City

“An amazing place with amazing souls” was the verdict of one of the members of the Dubai Living Out Loud Group after experiencing dinner and sunset on an ocean liner. Home to the first and only floating hotel in the emirate, the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth II was the chosen venue for this activity. Aside from a delicious meal, the sunset and great company made this get-together a special one.
